Handcrafted Vase from Arita – A Masterpiece of Yōhen Art

This extraordinary piece of ceramic art was crafted in 1972 in Arita – one of Japan’s most traditional porcelain regions. The artist, Kusuo Baba, whose name is highly esteemed among connoisseurs, has already retired – making this work a particularly valuable and unique collector’s item.

At the heart of this creation lies the fascinating Yōhen technique: during the firing process, unexpected color gradients and patterns emerge through the chemical reaction between the glaze and the flame – making each piece an absolute one-of-a-kind. Characteristic features include the fine white rim at the top of the vase’s neck and the deep, luminous cinnabar-red glaze.

This intense red coloration is achieved when copper in the glaze reacts with the reducing atmosphere inside the kiln. The result is a spectacular interplay of colors – ranging from soft ruby red to dark, almost mystical crimson tones. It is said that this red resembles that of rare rubies – an effect only possible through the highest quality materials and a precisely controlled firing process at 1300 °C.

This elegant vase captivates with its rich, dark red glaze, lending it a powerful yet refined presence. At the center, a fascinating display of light and dark blue hues unfolds, wrapping gently around the form like a flowing ribbon. This smooth transition of colors creates a harmonious overall impression and lends the object a special sense of depth and vibrancy.

A precious collector’s piece – elegant, artistic, and steeped in history. Ideal for lovers of Japanese ceramics, art connoisseurs, and anyone seeking something truly exceptional.
