MIKAWACHI-YAKI\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\nThe Origins of Mikawachi Ceramics<\/strong><\/h3>\nThe history of Mikawachi ceramics<\/strong> dates back to the late 16th century and is closely connected to the Korean invasions led by Toyotomi Hideyoshi (Imjin War, 1592\u20131597). After the campaign, the lord of the Hirado clan, Matsura Shigenobu<\/strong>, brought the Korean potter Koseki<\/strong> to Japan and established a kiln in Nakano<\/strong> (present-day Hirado, Nagasaki Prefecture) \u2013 a foundational point for what would become Mikawachi-yaki.<\/p>\nAt the same time, potters from the Karatsu region<\/strong> (north of present-day Saga Prefecture) migrated into the area. Their techniques were also strongly influenced by Korean pottery. Due to political instability under the local ruler Hata<\/strong>, many Karatsu potters were relocated to other regions of Ky\u016bsh\u016b, including Mikawachi (today part of Sasebo, specifically the districts of Kihara<\/strong> and Enaga<\/strong>).<\/p>\nFrom Earthenware to White Porcelain<\/strong><\/h3>\nInitially, Mikawachi produced rough earthenware<\/strong>, but around 1640<\/strong> production shifted to white porcelain<\/strong>, sparked by the discovery of porcelain clay on Hario Island<\/strong> by Imamura Sannoj\u014d<\/strong>, Koseki\u2019s son (1633). In 1637<\/strong>, Sannoj\u014d was appointed official master potter<\/strong> of the Hirado clan, and Mikawachi became a domain-sponsored kiln<\/strong> (kannayaki<\/em>).<\/p>\nIn 1650<\/strong>, the Hirado clan relocated all potters from Nakano to Mikawachi and established two main workshops \u2014 Eastern and Western kilns<\/strong> \u2014 with access to the finest raw materials and techniques.<\/p>\nFrom 1662<\/strong>, Sannoj\u014d\u2019s son Imamura Yajib\u0113 (also known as Joen)<\/strong> began using clay from Amakusa<\/strong>, further advancing porcelain production.
